I chose to start making all my dog’s food homemade back in 2023, after a routine blood screening test for cancer came back as “cancer positive”. We knew we wouldn’t do chemo/radiation on our dog, so instead of spending thousands to get a diagnosis, we decided to start feeding her higher-quality food as medicine. I am a big believer in “garbage in, garbage out” when it comes to what we as humans ingest, so it should be the same for our pets. Now, almost 3 years later, she’s healthier than ever – she’s lost 25% of her body weight – and faster than ever, catching and killing a record 3 squirrels in 2025. She’s still got some lipomas, but they aren’t getting any bigger.
to make my dog food recipe, you will first need to make tumeric golden paste. here’s the general recipe:
- in a small saucepan, heat 1 cup of water with 1/2 cup of ground tumeric. cook, stirring often, over medium heat for about 10 minutes.
- freshly grind 3tbsp of black pepper. remove pan from heat and stir it in.
- stir in 1/3 cup of coconut oil. consistency should be easily spreadable, almost like cake icing.
- spread into silicone molds and freeze on a cookie sheet for 1 hour. Here is the link to the silicone molds I use:

I store the tumeric bites in takeout containers in my freezer.
Once they’re frozen, you can assemble your individual dog food portions. This recipe makes 35 meals, and requires:
- 4lb ground meat (try to buy this organic and local! some butchers make it for cheap, from the less desireable cuts of beef)
- 4lb frozen broccoli
- 3lb frozen blueberries
- homemade tumeric bites

you’re going to break up your 4 lbs into 35 meatballs. divide them up on a parchment lined cookie sheet, each meatball will get one tumeric bite, one milk thistle, and one CAS chew pushed into it.
then I work assembly-line style to put the 4lbs of broccoli and 3lbs of blueberries into 35 ziploc sandwich bags. it’s okay if you run out of veggies or fruit, feel free to supplement with what you have. today I ran out of broccoli at bag #32, so 3 bags instead got carrot/daikon that I had available.
I store these dog meals in my deep freezer. I take a few out at a time to defrost for about 24 hours in my fridge, prior to serving.
