It’s been a while since I posted. It’s July and my garden is thriving! I hope to provide as much food for my family as possible for the year ahead, and luckily my awesome CSA, Moon Valley Farm, fills in the gaps for me.
That said, I still do not have a dairy animal (sigh) and my husband isn’t totally sold on meat chickens yet, so I need to source my meat and dairy through local channels. I have been using Farm Match for the last 4 years and I would sing their praises even if I didn’t have an affiliate link. Securing my food through them has truly changed my life, not just in how I procure the goods (pickup spot is SO much closer to my home than any grocery store) but also in the incredible quality. All animal products are grass-fed, soy-free, and unvaccinated.. exactly how I want them. I’ve been extremely pleased with the product quality across the board. I also love the fact that I am spending my money with local farms who evidently have similar values to mine, instead of giant grocery-store conglomerates.
It is a private, members-only club – you pay a one time $35 fee to join, which gives you access to purchase. You can search for farms based on your zip code, and it will provide you with drop-spots for farms near you. I personally use the “Grassfed270” farm, I place an order by Sunday night, and it is delivered in a cooler to a nearby drop-spot on Tuesday mornings, I pick it up at my own convenience. Some favorite prouducts include raw milk and A2 heavy cream, big 5lb blocks of raw cheddar cheese, fresh goat cheese, flank steaks, beef pet food, honey, kombucha, etc! In the winter I order organic citrus in bulk, super reasonably priced.
My newly discovered favorite products, though, are the cold cuts. I make my own bread and mayo, and I am aware that the nitrates in cold cuts are carcinogenic, so finding clean ones has been awesome. If you’re ordering from Grassfed270, they’re listed as “smoked and sliced turkey breasts – 1lb” for $21.50 and “dry beef – 1/2 lb” for $10. Organic cold cuts (which still have nitrates) are $18/pound at Wegmans, so I find the price on these to be totally fair. They come frozen and vacuum sealed, I defrost for about a day before making sandwiches.
